The Deep Adaptation Agenda

. . . The paper, published in July of 2018, concludes “…recent research suggests that human societies will experience disruptions to their basic functioning within less than ten years due to climate stress.  Such disruptions include increased levels of malnutrition, starvation, disease, civil conflict and war – and will not avoid affluent nations. This situation makes redundant the reformist[2] approach to sustainable development and related fields of corporate sustainability. Instead, a new approach which explores how to reduce harm and not make matters worse is important to develop. In support of that challenging, and ultimately personal process, understanding a ‘deep adaptation agenda’ may be useful.”

Summary

Resilience Hubs are community-serving facilities augmented to:

1.  support residents and

2.  coordinate resource distribution and services before, during, or after a natural hazard event.

They leverage established, trusted, and community-managed facilities that are used year-round as neighborhood centers for community-building activities. Designed well, Resilience Hubs can equitably enhance community resilience while reducing GHG emissions and improving local quality of life. They are a smart local investment with the potential to reduce burden on local emergency response teams, improve access to health improvement initiatives, foster greater community cohesion, and increase the effectiveness of community-centered institutions and programs.

newsday.com - by Vera Chinese - February 15, 2018

Southampton Town will take several steps this year to move toward its goal of meeting all of the community’s energy consumption needs through renewable sources by 2025.

Unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy sources are ones that can be replaced naturally and repeatedly. The ambitious mark requires not only looking to renewable energy — possibly through a plan that could replace PSEG as the default energy supplier in town — but also reducing consumption, Southampton Town Deputy Supervisor Frank Zappone said during a recent town board work session.

Green Options Advisory Committee Hears Solar Plan

Nov

Michael McDonald of Global Resilience Initiatives of Washington, D.C., shared a vision of energy independence with the town’s Green Options Advisory Committee last week.  JULIE LANE PHOTO

shelterislandreporter.timesreview.com - by Julie Lane - October 3, 2017

Ongoing coverage of the devastation Hurricane Maria left in Puerto Rico should be enough to prompt East End residents to plan for an age of energy independence separate from PSEG.

That’s how Michael McDonald of Washington, D.C.-based Global Resilience Initiatives Inc. sees it, and he’s working with East End officials to make energy dependence on a single source a thing of the past.

Mr. McDonald met with Shelter Island Green Options Advisory Committee members September 28 to talk about a time when PSEG would no longer have a monopoly providing electricity, but would have to compete for customers with energy cooperatives that would use 100 percent renewable solar power.

renewableenergylongisland.org - June 19, 2016

On June 15, 2016 Renewable Energy Long Island, along with a number of cosponsors, organized the South Fork Clean Energy Forum, to discuss with community leaders how to build a smarter, more affordable, more resilient energy system for the South Fork of Long Island. At the forum, experts presented exciting new plans to make the South Fork a leader in clean energy.

The South Fork Clean Energy Forum was the first time the public was able to get an in-depth look at the various building blocks and proposals for a new energy system for the South Fork. It was also the first energy forum ever co-sponsored by both towns, and the first one to be broadcast in both towns.
