Coronavirus Outbreaks in Florida, Arizona and Texas Show Some Signs of Slowing

States that saw a resurgence of the coronavirus weeks ago are starting to show signs of slowing their daily number of new infections.

The seven-day averages of new cases for Arizona, Texas and Florida have started trending downward, according to data from The COVID Tracking Project.

"Obviously, the southern states that really, actually had a major surge … They appear, I hope, and it looks like they may be cresting and coming back down," leading infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday.

Alex Azar, the secretary of Health and Human Services, said Monday that these developments are due to people "stepping up to the plate."

"It's due to the fact that people are actually wearing masks. They're wearing their masks. They're social distancing. They're engaging in good personal hygiene," Azar told "Fox and Friends."

While these states are showing positive signs, they are not in the clear. Their daily deaths numbers are still high, with Florida setting a record for new fatalities on Tuesday.

The national number of daily cases also appears to be flattening, but new fatalities are still trending upward....
